ALS Associations

Thanks to ALS Associations
Barbara Mahoney, ALS Patient, and her husband/caregiver, Ed

It was a crisp, wintry day on Cape Cod back in 1991 and I was finishing my daily two-mile walk. My right leg seemed unusually draggy. I thought little of it, never realizing that I was experiencing my first symptom of ALS (Low Gehrig’s Disease).

Now 14 years later, I am in a motorized wheelchair with limited use of legs and arms and I can no longer speak. I am very fortunate, thought, as I have slow progressing form of ALS, and have been able to see my five children, five grand children, and now to great grand children grow up. Most people with the disease live just two to five years.

During these past fourteen years, my husband, Ed, my family, and I have met many wonderful people, courageous patients and caregivers and truly caring organizations. The ALS Association MA Chapter has been there when we needed medical equipment from their loan closet, respite care, and even someone to talk to.
